A specialist for the newborn months
A newborn care specialist (also called a maternity nurse or night nurse) joins the family for the first weeks or months after birth. In New York most engagements run six to twelve weeks, day-and-night or nights only.
What she does
- Takes the nights so the parents can sleep, or works 24-hour shifts six days a week.
- Establishes feeding, whether breast, bottle or both, and gentle sleep routines.
- Supports the mother's recovery and confidence, and hands over to the nanny when the time comes.
- Keeps the nursery, laundry and a written log of feeds and sleep.
What we vet for
- Newborn-care training and years of newborn-only work, including twins where needed.
- Infant CPR and first aid, current and sighted.
- References from recent newborn families, verified by the team.
- Calm, discreet and comfortable in a staffed household.

Employment, done properly
The family employs the specialist directly. These are the points to settle in writing.
| Item | How it works |
|---|---|
| Employer | Your family, with payroll, taxes and the Form I-9; your payroll provider confirms how the role is classified |
| Overtime | New York's Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights: overtime after 40 hours a week, or 44 for live-in staff |
| Rest | A 24-hour day of rest each week |
| Right to work | Confirmed before any introduction; Lumière does not sponsor visas |
General information, not legal advice; your payroll provider confirms the current rules.
And when the newborn weeks end
Most families need a long-term nanny once the specialist leaves. We can search for both at the same time, so the handover is planned.

How Lumière vets newborn care specialists for New York
Lumière is based in Nice and is not a US-licensed employment agency. For roles in the United States we introduce only candidates with the right to work in the US; the family is the employer and runs payroll, taxes and the Form I-9, usually with a household-payroll provider. We do not sponsor US visas.
Right to work in the US
US citizenship, a green card or valid work authorisation confirmed before any introduction.
Background checks
Identity, driving record and criminal background through a US screening provider, plus references verified by the team.
NDA before introduction
Every candidate signs a non-disclosure agreement before meeting a high-profile household.
Everything in writing
Hours, overtime, days off, paid leave and the live-in arrangement agreed before the start date.
Payroll and tax
Handled by the family as household employer, usually through a household-payroll provider.
Paediatric first aid and CPR
Current certification sighted before the shortlist.
Declared employment. Every placement is made on a written, declared contract with the family as employer. Lumière does not place undeclared nannies.
The Lumière difference
Founded by a professional nanny, not a recruiter
"I founded Lumière because the families I worked for kept asking the same question: where do we find another nanny like you? I still take private placements. Every nanny I place is one I would work alongside."
Hanna founded Lumière Placements after years inside private households as a career nanny. Lumière is the only French Riviera-based boutique placement agency, placing across Monaco, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Nice, and worldwide, founded and led by a professional nanny.
